Friday, 16 May 2014 04:03 PM EDT

Google Inc. is buying a translate-on-the-go application developer, seeking to bolster its mobile services.

The world’s biggest search provider said it’s acquiring Quest Visual Inc., whose Word Lens app lets users translate signs with their smartphone cameras. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. The application is available for users of Android-based devices, Apple Inc. iPhones and Glass, Google’s computerized eyewear, according to Quest Visual’s website.

“By joining Google, we can incorporate Quest Visual’s technology into Google Translate’s broad language coverage and translation capabilities in the future,” the software company said.

Google is ramping up acquisitions as it looks to expand the appeal of its online features. This month, the Mountain View, California-based company announced deals for Stackdriver Inc., a startup that specializes in helping companies use online computing services, and Adometry Inc. to boost its Web measurement and analysis services.
