General Motors Co. plans to announce on Thursday that it will invest several billion dollars on its North American manufacturing plants over multiple years, a person familiar with the matter said.
The spending will be to upgrade factories and get them ready to produce several future models and will not include breaking ground on new plants, said the person, who asked not to be named because discussions are private.
The investment will secure future vehicles and jobs at the facilities, the person said.
GM has scheduled a “major U.S. manufacturing announcement” for Thursday at its Pontiac Metal Center in Pontiac, Michigan, where the company makes body parts for many vehicles.
The largest U.S. automaker will spend money to make improvements at the metal center, along with a sport utility vehicle plant in Lansing, Michigan, and several others, according to the person.
A GM joint venture in China said last week that it would spend $16 billion by 2020 to expand in that market.
