Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. said Wednesday its first-quarter revenue more than doubled as the chip industry emerged from the doldrums of the recession.

The company, a Taiwan-based provider of semiconductor packaging and testing services, posted revenue of 37.56 billion Taiwanese dollars ($1.18 billion), up from 13.4 billion Taiwanese dollars in the same quarter a year ago.

In March, the last month of the first quarter, revenue climbed to 15.85 billion Taiwanese dollars ($500 million) from 5.5 billion Taiwanese dollars, the company said.

Its U.S.-listed shares rose 10 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $4.85 in premarket trading.
