Sunday, 23 Nov 2014 08:44 AM

Yale University students were the most successful in winning Rhodes Scholarships this year, taking home four of the 32 announced prizes.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University and Brown University had three winners each, while Stanford University and Harvard University each had two recipients, according to a statement from the Office of the American Secretary of the Rhodes Trust dated yesterday.

The Rhodes Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic awards, provides funds for U.S. students to spend two- to-four years studying at England’s Oxford University. The winners include a University of Maryland neurobiology major, who slept on cardboard after he arrived in the U.S. from China at age five, and an MIT grad who has done economic research for the White House and the World Bank.

Previous winners include New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, who won the prize in 1981, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who got it in 1968.

The scholarship was started in 1902 by the will of British businessman Cecil Rhodes, the founder of what is now South Africa’s De Beers Group. Universities nominate students for the prize and two finalists are selected from each of 16 regions.

The value of the awards averages about $50,000 per year and as much as $200,000 total for students who stay at Oxford for four years.

The other schools with winners this year are the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Dartmouth College; the University of Alabama at Birmingham; the University of Texas at Austin; Wabash College; the University of Notre Dame; Cornell University; the U.S. Air Force Academy; the University of Michigan; the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga; Johns Hopkins University; Santa Clara University and the University of Puget Sound.
