Wal-Mart Shut 16 Mexico Stores for a Day as Protests Escalated

Tuesday, 18 Nov 2014 01:50 PM

Wal-Mart de Mexico SAB reopened at least 15 stores today that had been forced to close because of crowds protesting the disappearance of students gathered in their aisles and parking lots.

The retailer shut 16 locations yesterday for several hours in the western states of Oaxaca and Guerrero to protect shoppers, Antonio Ocaranza, a spokesman, said in a telephone interview. Most were Bodega Aurrera stores in small towns and a few were Wal-Marts in Oaxaca City, Ocaranza said, adding the retailer hasn’t calculated any possible losses.

Protests have been escalating in Mexico since prosecutors alleged local police in Guerrero handed 43 students to drug traffickers who killed them and burned their bodies after the town’s mayor ordered them rounded up in September. Demonstrators in several states had boycotted “Buen Fin,” a weekend of nationwide discounts similar to Black Friday that took place from Nov. 15 to Nov. 17.

“Our priority is the security of our clients and associates,” Ocaranza said. “When we have a situation in which we think they could be put at risk, we temporarily suspend operations. But we aren’t making a judgment with respect to the demonstrations that provoked the suspension.”

Last week, a rebel group known as EPR claimed responsibility for an explosion outside a supermarket in the city of Ecatepec, part of Mexico City’s metropolitan area, according to a report in El Universal.

Earlier this month, demonstrators burned the door of the government’s National Palace in Mexico City and blocked highways and an airport in Guerrero. Relatives of the missing students started nationwide bus tours to maintain pressure on the government to investigate the disappearances.
