Venezuela Indicts Opposition Leader Machado, Alleging Plot to Kill Maduro

Venezuela has indicted hardline opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, charging that she participated in an alleged plot to try to kill President Nicolas Maduro, the state prosecutor's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement added that "whoever, from inside or outside the national territory, conspires to destroy the nation's republican political style will be punished by eight to 16 years in prison."

It was not immediately clear if Machado would be detained pending trial.

Machado, who led major street protests against Maduro at the beginning of the year, has dismissed the accusations as a charade designed to silence her and distract Venezuelans from a growing economic crisis.

Fellow opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who with Machado kick started the anti-government protests, has been behind bars since February in what critics blast as a crackdown on political foes.

Government supporters deride Machado, 47, calling the former legislator an out-of-touch aristocrat intent on toppling the socialist government.

They frequently point out she signed a decree that dissolved state institutions during the de facto government that ruled for less than two days during the botched 2002 coup against late president Hugo Chavez.

The opposition's radical wing praises the fiery politician for standing up to what they consider a dictatorship.
