Vancouver Works to Generate Olympic Snow

VANCOUVER–Ivan Lee and his friend have an Olympic dream.

They're hoping they will be able to wear shorts downtown to celebrate Canada's first gold medal.

"The way things are going, it's going to be shorts weather for the Winter Games," said Lee, who was out and about in Vancouver Tuesday after returning home from a winter getaway in Florida.

"We couldn't afford tickets to the events, but when we win gold, we'll be outside wearing shorts. That's Vancouver for you."

Lee and his shorts-wearing friend, Johnny Lee, no relation, said they're not surprised organizers are cranking up snow machines as they prepare for the start of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

"I wear shorts all the time in Vancouver . . . a lot of people do, even in winter," said Johnny Lee.

Thirty days out from the Games, the Olympic movement right now is all about maintaining and generating snow, thanks to warm temperatures and wetter-than-normal conditions on the West Coast.

Even without the latest bout of balmy weather, Vancouver was already the warmest city to host the Winter Games.
