SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — A youthful former mayor is promising to fight corruption and end three decades of two-party rule in El Salvador's presidential election as campaigns wrap up ahead of the Feb. 3 vote.
The election of ex-San Salvador Mayor Nayib Bukele would bring a fresh face to a Central American country plagued by poverty, gang violence and among the world's highest murder rates.
The 37-year old is running against Carlos Calleja, of the conservative New Country coalition, and Hugo Martinez of the party of El Salvador's former FMLN guerrillas.
Bukele of the Grand National Alliance for Unity, or GANA for its Spanish initials, leads in the polls. If no candidate wins a majority of the votes, a runoff between the top two candidates will take place on March 10.
Campaigning ends Sunday.
