BEIRUT — Activists say a Syrian government airstrike in a suburb of the capital, Damascus, has killed at least 32 people and wounded many others.

An activist based near Damascus who goes by the name of Abu Yazan said the air raid occurred after Friday prayers in the suburb of Hamouriyeh, striking an area near a popular market.

The Local Coordination Committees said the airstrike hit people leaving a mosque, killing 35 people.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the air raid killed at least 32, adding that numbers are expected to rise because some were seriously wounded.

Casualty figures often differ immediately after an attack.

Syria's crisis began with an uprising against President Bashar Assad, then turned into a civil war. So far, 220,000 people have been killed.
