Saudi Arabia Designates Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Group

Friday, 07 Mar 2014 11:32 AM

Saudi Arabia officially designated the Muslim Brotherhood, and several other Islamist groups, as terrorist organizations, according to an Interior Ministry statement reported by the state-run Saudi News Agency.

Two days ago, Saudi Arabia and two Arab allies recalled their envoys from Qatar over its support for the Muslim Brotherhood. Saudi Arabia views the Islamist organization as threat because it seeks to bring political Islam to power via the ballot box.

Groups previously banned include al-Qaida cells in the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen and Iraq, as well as the Jabat al Nusra front in Syria, the Saudi branch of Hezbollah, and Yemen’s Houthi Shiite rebel group, according to the statement.

The government also gave Saudis fighting outside the country 15 days to return home. Last month, a royal decree said Saudi nationals would face up to 20 years in jail if found guilty of fighting abroad, while any Saudi who aided or joined a terrorist group would face a term of up to 30 years.
