HEBRON, West Bank (AP) — A Palestinian witness is disputing the Israeli army's account of a fatal shooting in the West Bank the previous day. The military said a Palestinian woman was shot as she attempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint.
Fawaz Abu Eisheh said Wednesday he was at the checkpoint and heard the troops ordering the woman, Hadeel al-Hashlamon, to stop. She didn't and they shot her in the leg.
Abu Eisheh says he thought there might be a language barrier and offered to translate.
But, he says, the woman was shot again and as she lay on the ground, a soldier fired "four, five bullets at her abdomen and chest."
The military said a metal detector was activated when she approached, she ignored calls to stop and pulled out a knife.
