Washington, EU Denounce UN Envoy For Anti-Israel Bias

By    |   Wednesday, 12 Jun 2013 12:15 PM

European Union (EU) representatives blasted U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC) envoy Richard Falk, saying he issued a biased report targeting Israel, the Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

Falk, the council’s special rapporteur for Palestine, released a report Monday attacking Israel’s actions in Gaza and calling for a special investigative committee to examine the Jewish State’s refusal to cooperate with his investigation of Israeli actions.

Most of the country representatives who spoke at the UNHRC session in Geneva praised Falk and blasted Israel’s conduct. The EU, by contrast, said it wanted reports to be “based on a more factual and legal analysis.”

The EU added that with regard to Falk’s latest report, “we regret to see no genuine progress in that direction.”

On Friday, Washington reiterated its call for Falk’s resignation after he denounced UN Watch, a Geneva-based nongovernmental organization, which has called for his resignation, according to the Post.

UN Watch has repeatedly criticized controversial comments  by Falk, including one he expressed in Foreign Policy Journal two months ago which appeared to blame U.S. global dominance for the Boston Marathon bombing.

Falk’s views and behavior “are offensive and provocative” and “do nothing” to advance human rights or peace, said U.S. Ambassador to the UNHRC Eileen Donahoe. “We again call for his resignation.”
