After the Brotherhood, Egyptian Hostility to Mubarak Ebbs

By    |   Monday, 22 Jul 2013 05:05 PM

Egypt's new political power dynamic following the July 3 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi is a familiar one: Gone after one year in power are Morsi and his allies from the Muslim Brotherhood, and back are many faces from the regime of President Hosni Mubarak – the autocrat who ruled Egypt for almost 30 years until his ouster in February 2011.

The overthrow of Morsi has created "a new appreciation for military rule in a country that so recently shunned it, and a striking return to the way things were before the 2011 revolution against a Mubarak regime that was widely considered irredeemably corrupt and exploitative," the Washington Post reports.

Islamists are absent from the country’s new cabinet, while 11 out of the 34 current ministers also served under Mubarak. Prosecutors are investigating the nation’s pre-coup Muslim Brotherhood leadership on charges of incitement, and prisoners are handcuffed and interrogated about their ties to the Brotherhood.

The state-run media increasingly sounds like it did during the Mubarak era – full of patriotic images and praise for the military.

Thus far, there hasn’t been a backlash against this trend.

Egyptians who once demanded punishment for the “feloul” (the so-called remnants of Mubarak’s regime) now say that a year of disastrous Brotherhood rule has put everything in perspective, the Post reported.

“I don’t care if they are feloul, as long as they fix what the Brotherhood did,” said Mohamed Mahmoud, a locksmith who voted for Morsi and later joined the protests to oust him.
