Egypt's Military Accused of Torture, Abuse

The Egyptian military's takeover of many policing duties from the notorious internal security forces hasn't stopped a series of abuses—including allegations of torture, beatings, arbitrary arrests and disappearances—despite the institution's reputation for constraint, human rights and opposition groups tell The Wall Street Journal.

Egypt's military took over policing duties on Jan. 29 from the Ministry of Interior, whose security forces long have been accused of brutally mistreating prisoners, including political opponents. In contrast, the army— which conscripts all males over 18 years old—has been viewed as a force of moderation during the political turmoil here.

A succession of rallies and demonstrations, in Egypt, Jordan, Yemen and Algeria have been inspired directly by the popular outpouring of anger that toppled Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. See how these uprisings have progressed.
