The Anti-Defamation League has joined more than 160 Jewish organizations to call on the Trump administration to resettle 95,000 refugees next year because "turning our backs on people fleeing for their lives is unthinkable."

"As Jews, we know all too well what happens when people fleeing for their lives have nowhere to turn," the organizations said in a letter Wednesday to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The ADL posted a tweet with the letter and signatories on Friday.

"Our parents or grandparents, neighbors or community members once faced a similarly callous and unwelcoming world, with fatal consequences," the letter said.

The Trump administration reportedly is planning to slash refugee resettlements to zero next year, though Homeland Security officials said last month that they recommended that 3,000 to 10,000 refugees be resettled.

Those numbers are still down from the 30,000 who were resettled this year, according to news reports. Even that figure amounted to a drastic cut from last year.

Among the Jewish organizations opposing the Trump White House's possible move include B'nai B'rith International, the Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action, the Jewish Council of Public Affairs, and the Jewish Federation of North America.

"The Jewish community has a particular moral responsibility that compels our commitment to welcoming refugees," the letter said.
