Dershowitz: Obama Facilitating Mideast Nuke Arms Race

By    |   Friday, 27 March 2015 12:59 PM

The Obama administration's decision to declassify a 1987 Pentagon report about Israel's development of a hydrogen bomb, while redacting information about France, Germany and other countries, is a show of petty revenge against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, famed Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said Friday on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"It seems vindictive and deliberate," Dershowitz said. "It's also very stupid, let me tell you why. President Obama claims to be interested in nonproliferation and the reason that Israel for years has never officially commented on its nuclear program is precisely to avoid proliferation. If Israel starts talking about its nuclear program or if the United States starts talking about Israel's nuclear program, it will put political pressure on some of the other countries in the region to develop nuclear weapons. So it's not only nasty, it's counterproductive."

"It goes against President Obama's policies. President Obama is being so petulant and petty in trying to get revenge against Netanyahu that he's even willing to undercut his own anti-proliferation program in order to achieve it. This is really gotten to a point where the United States' policy in regard to Israel is not only anti-Israel, but it's against the interests of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, the Emirates, others in the region and it has to stop. Grow up, the administration has to grow up and put this anger behind them and start having a policy."

It has long been understood, though never officially confirmed, that Israel has nuclear weapons, Dershowitz explained, a purposeful omission so as not to rub it in the face of other Middle East nations.

"There is a virtue in subtlety," Dershowitz said. "There is a virtue in not being confrontational and Israel has tried very hard to avoid confronting its neighbors with its nuclear program directly and this kind of studied ambiguity has been a joint policy of both the United States and Israel. How dare the United States break it unilaterally without consulting with its ally, Israel? At the very least it required a joint consultation and a joint strategy. But to break a joint program like this sounds like it's petty, nasty, petulance and typical of the Obama administration's attitude towards Israel in the last few months."

In his voracious fervor to get a deal with Iran, Obama is instead succeeding in ending a long-standing Mideast policy of nuclear nonproliferation, he continued.

"This is the end of nonproliferation and it's all Barack Obama's fault, the man who I voted for and the man who is making a terrible mistake on nuclear policy in the Middle East," he said.
