Muslim Charities Offer to Protect Malaysian Churches

Sunday, 10 Jan 2010 10:20 PM

KUALA LUMPUR - Some 130 Muslim non-governmental organisations have offered to become the "eyes and ears" of the government to safeguard Christian churches from attacks. The People's Volunteer Corps or Rela has also offered to do the same.

Among the NGOs that have volunteered are the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association, Malay Cultural Organisations and Related Bodies Cooperation Network (Pewaris), Pertu-buhan Peribumi Perkasa (Perkasa), National Association of Muslim Students and Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma).

Through the initiative, 60 volunteers have stepped forward to help the authorities to monitor security at houses of worship in the Klang Valley with immediate effect.

PPIM executive secretary Datuk Nadzim Johan, who represented the NGOs, said yesterday this was a proactive step on their part in the wake of the incidents involving churches.

"We will be the eyes and ears of the police and the government and will inform them of any news and rumours. It is part of our outreach programme to be united as Malaysians," he said at a press conference.

He said the NGOs would initiate talks with non-Muslims groups on the use of the word "Allah" adding, "We want to hold close door meetings with them so that we can discuss about it."
