NATO Fighters Track Russian Plane Over Baltic Sea, Latvia Says

Wednesday, 19 Nov 2014 06:30 AM

Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) -- NATO CF-188 jets intercepted a Russian IL-20 military surveillance plane over the Baltic Sea in the second such incident this week.

The encounter between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s fighters, based in the Baltic region, and the Russian aircraft occurred yesterday over international waters near Latvia’s territorial sea, Latvia’s army said today on Twitter.

Russian military planes and naval vessels have been increasingly active in the Baltic Sea between St. Petersburg and Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave, amid growing tensions with NATO over the conflict in Ukraine. NATO jets intercepted a Russian Su-27 fighter plane on Nov. 17 and there were four similar incidents last week. Latvia and Lithuania also reported Russian naval vessels in their exclusive economic zones.

A Russian navy tanker ship, the Viktor Koneckiy, was observed 11.6 nautical miles from Latvian waters yesterday, the Latvian army also said on Twitter today, the second sighting of this vessel near the Latvian border in the past three days.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a TV interview with German broadcaster ARD on Nov. 16 that Russian planes and ships don’t violate European borders and that military exercises take place “exclusively in international waters and over international airspace.”
