EU Agrees to Shelter 120,000 Refugees as Vote Lays Bare Strains

Tuesday, 22 September 2015 12:15 PM EDT

(Bloomberg) -- European Union interior ministers agreed to shelter 120,000 refugees from Middle Eastern wars and civil strife, while continuing to feud over which countries will take them in.

The ministers dealt with a small part of the refugee crisis at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, as a new study predicted that the EU could be the destination of 1 million migrants a year for some time to come.

“Decision is taken, but long way to go at least to see the light in the tunnel,” Lithuania’s ambassador to the EU, Jovita Neliupsiene, said in a Twitter posting.

EU government leaders will continue the search for answers at a summit on Wednesday, weighing plans for reinforced border surveillance, more efficient registration of new arrivals, and aid for frontline countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

EU pretensions to unity on the refugee question were undercut Tuesday by a move by bigger countries to force the decision through over the opposition of Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the opponents will be required to house refugees against their will. An earlier decision to relocate 40,000 refugees across the bloc still hasn’t been fully implemented.
