A delegation from Australia's WikiLeaks Party met with Syrian government officials last week in what it said was a statement of solidarity against Western interference in the country's civil war, BuzzFeed reports

The party, launched this year to support WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's bid for a seat in Australia's Senate, had announced the visit on it's website on Dec. 19. Assange is currently living under asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

"The WikiLeaks Party was the first party in Australia to warn of the deadly consequences of any Western military intervention in Syria," the party's web post said. "It went further by questioning the credibility of the excuses of such intervention based on unsubstantiated reports of the Syrian Army’s use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians. Such claims that reminded us the same excuses used to invade Iraq. Such claims that turned out to be no more than fabrications and lies."

Among the delegation was Assange's father, John Shipton, who told Syrian television, "We'll continue to expose the truth to the Australian people and to our international audience, and next year we will set up an office in Damascus."

BuzzFeed reported that the delegation also included Tim Anderson, who was convicted in the 1978 Sydney Hilton Hotel bombing. The Syrian Arab News Agency also reported on the visit.

The TV report shows the group meeting with Syria's prime minister, deputy foreign minister and health minister. A photo posted to Twitter also appears to show them meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad.
