The Trump administration is attempting to help de-escalate violence between Israelis and Palestinians over Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, Haaretz reported Saturday.

Israeli officials and Arab diplomats told Haaretz the White House is holding talks with Jordan, Israel, the Palestinians and other individuals in the Arab world.

A dispute over security measures at the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism and a revered site to Christians and Muslims, has led to violence and mass riots across the Arab world. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday announced an end to contact with Israeli officials until metal detectors were removed, the same day three Palestinian protesters were killed and three Israelis were stabbed to death in their settlement home.

The White House has quietly approached the situation, with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner handling the talks. Jason Greenblatt, the U.S. envoy to the peace process, David Friedman, the U.S. ambassador in Tel Aviv, and Donald Blome, the U.S. consul-general in Jerusalem, are also assisting the president's senior adviser.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is discussing whether to remove the metal detectors, but the United States is discussing only security arrangements and how to implement them effectively, Haaretz quoted a source.
