Book Claims Terrorists Using eBay, Reddit, Porn to Plot Attacks

Islamic State and al-Qaida terrorists in are using eBay, Reddit, and pornographic pictures to convey messages and plot out attacks, claims a new edition of a book that details the secret history of Mossad, Israel's spy agency.

The book, "Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad," was published in 1999, but author Gordon Thomas has added two new chapters about Israel during the Arab Spring, reports the New York Post, which printed an excerpt from the book's new section Sunday.

In the excerpt, Thomas explains how Mossad uses its new cyberwarfare department to track terror threats while attacking Iran's nuclear capability.

The discovery came through the use of the malware Stuxnet, which had been designed to attack centrifuges at Iran's nuclear enrichment facility at Natanz. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the action as being able to slow Iran's race to create a nuclear bomb by up to three years.

Stuxnet increased the use of cyberwarfare, the book explained, and eventually many of the Mossad cybersecurity unit's most-skilled cryptologists also became its codebreakers and mastered steganography, the art of concealing secret information inside digital files.

They soon found that al-Qaida was using the technique to encrypt messages into ads for goods being offered on eBay. Yet other operatives started tracking the message board Reddit, and several times found terrorists using code that broken down, showed attacks being planned or about to happen.

In addition, one intelligence source said documents and orders for the next target were being concealed in X-rated photos.

Mossad has linguistic specialists proficient in Arabic, Urdu, and Pashto who can translate online magazines al-Qaida and ISIS are publishing, and when they discovered an attack may be on the way, Mossad sends information to the country's cybercommand service, the book claims.

Mossad's cyberwar unit has a slogan, "tomorrow is zero hour," referring to a phone message by the U.S. National Security Agency that ended up being a code about the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. That message came too late, but Tamir Pardo, the 11th director of Mossad, is said to be determined such a mistake will not happen again, leading to the increase in cybersecurity work.

Pardo is one of several officers who has undergone training through the NSA and knows the importance of cyberwarfare. He reportedly has taken part in "soft" espionage missions that include hacking into the Iranian version of Facebook and other social networking sites, the book says.

And when Netanyahu visited the Mossad cybersecurity unit in 2010, he said its battles against cyberattacks were considered "Israel's most important defense" because of their work against Iran's nuclear capabilities.
