The Russian military will reportedly field a new armed, tank-like robot that outperformed humans in recent exercises outside Moscow.

According to Defense One, Russian Col. Oleg Pomazuev announced the plan in the news site Military Review late last month.

Pomazuev, who runs runs the Department of Innovation Research at the Russian military's Main Directorate of Research Activities, said the bot — called Nerehta — can carry a 12.7mm or 7.62mm machine gun or an AG-30M grenade launcher.

The Russian colonel didn't say was which "manned platforms" the robot outperformed in exercises in Belarus, Defense One noted, adding the Russian army has two of similar size and armament.

Russia is testing a wide variety of unmanned ground vehicles — from small IED-disposal robots up to large armed ones, Samuel Bendett, an associate research analyst with the Center for Naval Analyses' International Affairs Group, told Defense One.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley said Tuesday trends in robotic battle systems are proceeding faster than most people realize, Defense One reported.

"We are in a period of time, historically, where you are getting a convergence of a wide variety of technologies," he said at the Army's CyCon event in Washington, Defense One reported."We are at the leading edge of that. In combination, I guarantee that they are changing and will change the fundamental character of war."

"Within a matter of years, you will see widespread use of robots," he predicted, Defense One reported.
