Stockholm Experiences Third Night of Rare Racial Riots

Stockholm Experiences Third Night of Rare Racial Riots
Policemen extinguish burning cars after youths rioted in Husby, northern Stockholm on May 20.

Rampaging protesters pelted police and firefighters with stones and torched 30 cars Tuesday in Stockholm, as the Swedish capital experienced a third consecutive night of apparently race-related riots.

Buildings were also set afire, and mobs smashed out the windows of a police station in central Stockholm.

More than 100 vehicles were set on fire Sunday night in the capital area, and more than 100 people rioted there on Monday, The Local, an English-language Stockholm paper reported.

The violence began Sunday in the Stockholm suburb of Husby after police there fatally shot a 69-year-old man they said was carrying a large knife.

Husby is a multicultural area that is home to immigrant populations from Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and Somalia.

Local community groups portrayed the violence as resulting from frustration over “structural racism,” high unemployment, inequality, and poor schools.

“It’s not the first time something like this has happened, and it’s not the last,” student leader Rami al-Khamsi told The Local. “This is the kind of reaction when there isn’t equality between people, which is the case in Sweden.”

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeld warned that more rioting could take place before things calm down, according to the Wall Street Journal.
