Sarkozy Denies Taking Campaign Cash From Gadhafi

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has vehemently denied accusations that he received money to fund his election campaign from deposed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, reports Euro News.

“If he had funded it then I haven’t been very grateful,” Sarkozy told an interviewer during a live television interview after being reminded that Gaddafi’s son Saif al Islam made the accusation.

“I’m not sure that he makes a good witness. Gaddafi, who is known for talking nonsense, has even said that there were checks. Well ask his son to present them,” Sarkozy said.

Gaddafi’s son previously claimed in a March 2011 interview with euronews that his father helped fun Sarkozy’s 2007 campaign.

“Sarkozy must repay Libya the money he took for his election campaign. We financed it. We have all the details and we are ready to publish them. The first thing we ask of this clown Sarkozy is that he repay this money to the Libyan people. We helped him become president so that he would help the Libyan people but he has disappointed us. And very soon we will publish all the details,” al-Islam said.

The allegations, based on information contained in documents from 2005, claim that Sarkozy accepted over $60 million from Gadhafi.

Sarkozy is currently running for a second term as French president.
