A vehicle in a motorcade carrying Samantha Power, America's ambassador to the United Nations, struck and killed a 7-year-old boy in Cameroon on Monday, The Washington Post reports.

The motorcade was reportedly traveling at 60 mph when the child darted into the road from a group of spectators who had lined to road to watch, according to The Independent.

The accident occurred in the northern Cameroon city of Mokolo. The driver of the sixth vehicle in the convoy initially stopped, but was told to keep moving by American security forces. The driver was Cameroonian, but press agencies were unable to learn whether he was working for the U.S. Embassy or for one of the local security agencies involved in protecting Power.

The motorcade traveled significantly slower for the rest of the day, according to The Independent. The area is considered dangerous, and Power was there to discuss the threat of Boko Haram.

She stopped on the way back and met with the boy's family to "offer our profound condolences and our grief and heartbreak," she said.
