Billionaire Richard Branson, the adventure-loving founder of the Virgin Group, narrowly dodged death after he went flying off his bike and smashed head first into the pavement in the British Virgin Islands.

"I really thought I was going to die … My life was literally flashing before my eyes." Branson revealed in a chilling blog post.

The near tragedy occurred Monday on the lush tropical island of Virgin Gorda as Branson, 66, went on a high-speed bike ride with his two adult children, Holly and Sam, as he trained for the upcoming Virgin Strive Challenge race.

"I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a 'sleeping policeman' hump in the road head on. The next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes," Branson recalled.

"I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life.

"My bike went flying off the cliff and disappeared. We've since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut."

As soon as he landed and realized he was still alive, Branson said he began checking to see if he could move his limbs.

"I really couldn't believe I was alive, let alone not paralyzed," said the intrepid business tycoon, who was patched up and x-rayed for damage.

"[I] have been extremely fortunate that apart from a cracked cheek and some torn ligaments I hopefully will be able to complete the Virgin Strive Challenge next month. My biggest hardship is having to drink tea out of a straw. Oh, and being called elephant man by a 6-year-old!

"My attitude has always been, if you fall flat on your face, at least you're moving forward. All you have to do is get back up and try again."

The crash happened on the fifth anniversary of a fire that destroyed his Necker Island home in the Caribbean.

Earlier this year, Branson suffered a stingray attack and a head injury that required stitches during a dive in the Cayman Islands.

Branson is well known for his fearless derring-do, having spent more than 30 years in pursuit of various world records.

He attempted the fastest Atlantic Ocean crossing, but his boat capsized and he and his crew had to be rescued by helicopter. And he has made several attempts to circumnavigate the globe by hot-air balloon.
