Rahm's Son Prays at Jerusalem Wall Alone

Thursday, 27 May 2010 10:37 AM EDT

JERUSALEM- White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and his family are touring Jerusalem's Old City. When they arrived at the Western Wall only Rahm's son, Zach, not Rahm himself, went up to the Wall.

The bar-mitzva of Emanuel's son and nephew is yet to take place.

Far-right activist Itamar Ben-Gvir shouted abuse at White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and his family on Thursday morning, as they were walking through the Cardo in Jerusalem's Old City.

He also hurled abuse at police officers, shouting "for shame," and "you won't shut me up!"

Police immediately surrounded Ben-Gvir, who shouted that Emanuel was "a hater of Israel," and removed him from the scene, taking him into custody.

The bar mitzva is planned to take place at the Davidson Center (just inside Dung Gate in the Old City).

Earlier on Thursday, Ben-Gvir said that he and other activists would protest at the Western Wall plaza against the bar mitzva of Emanuel's son and nephew.

Ben-Gvir, standing alone in his protest at the Western Wall plaza, claimed that while he was praying he was approached by police and told to keep quiet when Emanuel arrives. However, he said, he could not be legally forced to stay silent. Rather, he said, he had "a duty to protest against a hater of Israel."

After a week-long family visit to Israel, Emanuel met Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and extended an invitation to Netanyahu from President Barack Obama to come to Washington on Tuesday for “a work meeting to discuss both our shared security interests as well as our close cooperation in seeking peace between Israel and its neighbors,” he said.

Emanuel called the visit wonderful, saying Israelis had been “exceptionally warm and genuine in their affection to both all the family in general, butparticularly to Zach [his son] on his bar mitzva in wishing him a mazal tov.”
