Guinea Says Ebola Spreads to New Regions Near AngloGold Mine

Saturday, 18 October 2014 05:37 PM

Guinea officials said the Ebola virus has spread to two new regions, including one with an AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. mine, complicating efforts to control the disease.

The village that reported the infections in Siguiri is 19 miles from the Johannesburg-based company’s facility, the Ministry of Health and AngloGold said in statements today. No employees have been infected and operations continue, the mining company said.

The death toll in Guinea has risen to 887 since the outbreak started in December, the ministry said in the statement. More than 4,500 people have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, decimating the economies of the three nations and threatening to slow growth in West Africa.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said yesterday that the world has finally “woken up” to the threat of Ebola and must commit the necessary resources to containment efforts. President Barack Obama is preparing a request for extra money on top of the $1 billion that the U.S. pledged to fight Ebola, according to one White House official and a Capitol Hill official.

“This fight requires a commitment from every nation that has the capacity to help, whether that is with emergency funds, medical supplies or clinical expertise,” Johnson-Sirleaf said. The international community can’t “pull up the drawbridge and wish the situation away.”
