US to Station Nukes in UK, Counter Threats From Russia

After 15 years thermo-nuclear weapons will be returning to the United Kingdom via the U.S. military, according to Pentagon documents seen by The Telegraph.

The documents specify the housing of B61-12 gravity bombs, which are three-times the strength of the Hiroshima bomb, are smaller, and able to be delivered by conventional fighter jets. The weapons are to be stored at the Royal Air Force Lakenheath in Suffolk, U.K.

U.S. missiles were removed from Britain in 2008 when it was determined the Cold War had run its course and military threats from Russia had diminished. The return of these weapons has unnerved many including Moscow who as far back September advised the move would be seen as an "escalation and a destabilizing practice," according to the report.

The unredacted documents from the US Department of Defense's procurement database show the Pentagon has ordered equipment, including ballistic shields, for Lakenheath, and state that construction of a 144-bed housing facility for the U.S. Air Force soldiers will begin in June.

Russian foreign ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova said: "In the context of the transition of the United States and NATO to an openly confrontational course of inflicting a 'strategic defeat' on Russia, this practice and its development force us to take compensating countermeasures to reliably protect the security interests of our country and its allies."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman for the U.K. said: "It remains a longstanding UK and NATO policy to neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons at a given location," according to The Telegraph report.

Zakharova added that the Kremlin would be forced to take countermeasures to "safeguard security interests of our country and its allies," though did not specify what these countermeasures would be.

The moving of U.S. nuclear weapons to the U.K. is just the latest in a series of ongoing tensions birthed out Russia's war with Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for an emergency U.N. Security Council session this week to discuss the downing of a Russian plane full of Ukrainian POWs for a potential prisoner exchange.
