Report: US Sends 6 Fighter Jets to SKorea for Week of Air Combat Exercises

The U.S. sent six advanced stealth fighter jets to South Korea for joint weeklong air combat exercises and war rehearsals as tensions continue to rise between North Korea and the Trump administration, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports.

The move comes days after North Korea launched what the Pentagon said was an intercontinental ballistic missile, possibly its longest-range test yet. Pyongyang boasted the rocket could reach all of the U.S. mainland, a goal for leader Kim Jong Un.

Kim has test-fired 23 missiles in 2017, and has in less than six years into his reign tested more missiles than his father and grandfather combined, according to CNN. The U.S. has responded with economic sanctions and Trump in late November named North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism.

The U.S. fighter jets will join the South Korean Air Force’s annual airborne exercise from Dec. 4-8, according to Yonhap, and it will mark the first time that six F-22 Raptors fly over South Korea at once. South Korea has said its military is “maintaining a firm readiness posture” for a reaction from North Korea.

The U.S. is also planning to send F-35A and F-35B stealth jets, F-16C fighter planes along with an unspecified number of B-1B bombers.

North Korea has maintained that it is a "responsible nuclear power" but said it was defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity from the "U.S. imperialists' nuclear blackmail policy and nuclear threat."
