Nextdoor, a smartphone app that allows users to connect with others in their neighborhood, has seen a surge in engagement and sign-ups for people to lend a hand to others in their area as the coronavirus continues to spread, according to reports in several countries.

The app is also launching a new interactive map to let neighbors offer help to one another during the outbreak, which has infected more than 180,000 people and killed more than 8,500.

In Australia, neighbors are swapping supplies and helping elderly neighbors. Some are coordinating online to share tips and just chat.

In the United Kingdom, 400 “Covid-19 Mutual Aid UK” groups have been formed to encourage people to help the vulnerable, elderly and those in difficulty as much as possible.

“We want to make sure no one in our communities is left to face this crisis alone, without the basics and support they need from the outside world,” said Anna Vickerstaff, one of the coordinators of this new national network.

Residents in San Jose, Calif., are volunteering to do the same. "I think we're all here to help each other actually," Sunnyvale resident Angela Davis told ABC 7 News. "That's why we are put on this earth."

"For me, my way of giving back to the community, typically, is through music," Sunnyvale resident Gobl said. "But since I am unable to do that, this is how I want to give back to the community."
