Sudan Protests Resume for 4th Day over Prices, Shortages

Saturday, 22 December 2018 08:38 AM EST

CAIRO (AP) — Protests over worsening economic conditions have resumed for a fourth consecutive day, with hundreds taking to the streets in Sudan's capital Khartoum and elsewhere in the country.

Saturday's protests came as President Omar Bashir fired the governor of Gadaref, a province in eastern Sudan where six demonstrators died Thursday in clashes with police, according to the state Sudan news agency.

The agency said schools have been indefinitely closed in a province north of Khartoum and in North Darfur province west of Khartoum. Classes in Khartoum have also been indefinitely suspended.

It said authorities placed the eastern cities of Kosti and Rabak under curfew following acts of "sabotage" targeting government offices there, according to the agency.

The protests are chiefly about rising prices and shortages of food and fuel.
