BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon's central bank governor says Beirut will abide by a U.S. law that imposes sanctions on banks that knowingly do business with the militant Hezbollah group.
Riad Salameh told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that bank officials are now studying regulations issued last week, when the law came into effect.
Salameh's comments at the Banque Du Liban headquarters in Beirut came three days after the US's Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, issued regulations aimed at implementing the 2015 Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act.
Hezbollah, a powerful Lebanese group that has members in parliament and the Cabinet, is considered a terrorist organization by the United States.
Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasarallah said recently that his group does not deal with Lebanese or foreign banks.
