McDonald's Opening at Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie

Wednesday, 30 December 2009 12:01 AM EST

McDonald's is planning to open a new fast food outlet at Checkpoint Charlie next year — completing the Berlin landmark’s transformation from Cold War front line to commercial tourist hotspot.

The 120-seat restaurant will be opposite the Mauermuseum, which is dedicated to the Berlin Wall that used to divide the city. It is due to be selling burgers, fries and other products from the middle of the year.

Checkpoint Charlie, where Soviet and US tanks faced off in 1961, was one of several crossing points between East and West Berlin from the postwar division of the city until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
