GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemalans go the polls Sunday in the second-round presidential runoff which pits ex-first lady Sandra Torres against conservative Alejandro Giammattei.
Giammattei is making his fourth bid for the presidency and is favored in polls.
The 63-year-old doctor has earned a reputation of being tough on crime and wants to re-introduce the death penalty.
Torres was married to — and later divorced — former President Álvaro Colom (2008-2012), but has a record of her own as a businesswoman who ran a textile and apparel company.
Polling stations open at 7:00 a.m. local time and close at 6:00 p.m., with preliminary results expected by late Sunday.
The winner will take office Jan. 14 and be tasked with attempting to stem the large flow of migrants headed toward the United States.
