SAO PAULO (AP) — A leading far-right presidential candidate in Brazil will skip the seven remaining television debates until the Oct.7 election.

Congressman Jair Bolsonaro's attorney Gustavo Bebianno said Wednesday night that debates don't add to the presidential race.

Bolsonaro's decision not to participate was announced after his support slipped following two recent TV debates.

Jailed former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads polls, but he is likely to be barred from seeking office. Bolsonaro is running in second far ahead of former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad, who is da Silva's likely replacement and choice for vice president.

Conservative candidate Geraldo Alckmin is polling at less than 10 percent and said Wednesday that all candidates want to face Bolsonaro in a run-off because they will be more likely to win.
