Head of Bolsonaro's Party Target of Police Search Order

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Federal police in Brazil have carried out a search warrant at an address linked to the head of President Jair Bolsonaro's political party.

Social Liberal Party leader Luciano Bivar's lawyer said in a statement Tuesday that he thought the warrant was unnecessary as the investigation into alleged corruption during the presidential campaign began 10 months ago with "no indication of fraud".

Police are investigating allegations Bolsonaro's party gave money to so-called "front" candidates during the 2018 elections.

Funding candidates with no chance of winning has historically been a way to get around campaign finance laws in Brazil or get kickbacks.

A regional electoral court said it issued the search warrant Monday but could not share any details as the police investigation is under seal.
