Sen. Scott: Dems Want to Take Guns, Not Solve Shootings

By    |   Monday, 12 August 2019 02:37 PM

Democrats don't want to work on treating mental health issues or other situations that result in mass shootings, but instead rush to seize people's guns, Florida Sen. Rick Scott, who was his state's governor during the Parkland High School massacre said Monday.

"What we did in Florida was after Parkland happened, I sat down within days, within four to five days, I got law enforcement together, mental health counselors together, and I got educators together," the Republican lawmaker told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."  "Within three weeks, we passed logical, common-sense legislation to make our schools and communities safer.”

But instead, "this is like Groundhog Day," Scott said. "We have a shooting and Democrats want to take away your guns. They don’t want to solve problems, they want to take away your guns. That’s what totalitarian governments do."

After the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he and President Donald Trump said are considering red flag laws and more strict background checks. Scott said Monday similar red flag laws were passed in Florida.

“In almost all these shootings, we know that, just like the Parkland shooting, if you talk to the kids at Parkland, they said ‘Yeah, we knew who was going to do it,” said Scott.

Such "common sense" laws are what are needed, along with a focus on mental health issues, he added.
