Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro Thursday accused President Donald Trump of issuing his new rule limiting immigrants' green cards because he wants "a nation in his own image."

“He wants to keep certain people out, only let certain people in, and this is not the spirit that we should move forward with,” the former Housing and Urban Development secretary told CNN's "New Day."

“Let’s be clear about what that policy change is; it relates to people who are legal immigrants here," Castro added. "It matters because they’re legal immigrants and they’re paying taxes to this country, they’re working hard."

The rule, which is expected to reduce immigration by denying visas to poor migrants, has already come under legal challenges in California.

"All of us have family members, wherever you're from, whether you're from Ireland, Mexico like my family, India, wherever you're from, you can tell stories of family members that came here with almost nothing," said Castro.

On Thursday Castro also discussed his decision to buy ad space on Fox News' "Fox and Friends," where he blamed Trump and his rhetoric for mass shootings in El Paso that killed 22 people. The gunman was tied to a manifesto speaking out against a Hispanic "invasion," a term linked to language the president has used in his speeches.

“I wanted to deliver a message to the president to understand that he has poisoned the well for many people and inspired racists like that shooter in El Paso to take deadly action against Americans,” Castro said.
