U.S. Considering Sanctions on C. African Republic

Sunday, 26 January 2014 10:46 PM EST

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State John Kerry says the United States is prepared to consider sanctions against the Central African Republic in response to violence between Muslim and Christian coalitions in the country.

Kerry says the U.S. is "deeply disturbed" by reports that some Republic leaders may be supporting attacks by the mostly Muslim Seleka and the Christian anti-Balaka groups.

He says the U.S. may impose targeted sanctions against past and present political leaders who "pursue their own selfish ends by abetting or encouraging the violence."

Kerry praised Catherine Samba-Panza, who was named the Republic's interim president last week, for working to end the violence and foster reconciliation.

The U.S. is providing transportation, equipment, training and logistical support to African-led troops who are trying to restore stability to the Republic.
