Japan's defense ministry said Tuesday it has confirmed a Russian navy submarine sailed through the waters between southwestern Yonaguni Island and Iriomote Island for the first time.

Russian navy's rescue vessel and a submarine were heading northeast in the waters about 50 km (30 miles) south of Yonaguni Island, in Japan's southwestern Okinawa prefecture, the ministry said.
