James Melville, Jr., U.S. ambassador to Estonia, has resigned due to frustration over President Donald Trump's comments about the European Union as well as the administration's treatment of U.S. allies, The Hill reported Friday.

Melville, a career diplomat, was due to retire soon, according to Foreign Policy, but reportedly decided to move the date up, announcing his decision in a private Facebook post.

At issue was Melville's dislike of Trump's statements where he said the president claimed "the EU was 'set up to take advantage of the United States, to attack our piggy bank,'" and that "'NATO is as bad as NAFTA,'" he reportedly wrote in his Facebook post, saying the attitude "proves to me that it's time to go."

"I leave willingly and with deep gratitude for being able to serve my nation with integrity for many years, and with great confidence that America, which is and has always been, great, will someday return to being right," Melville wrote, stating his last day would be July 29.

Melville, nominated as ambassador by former President Barack Obama in 2015, has served in a variety of other diplomatic roles for more than 30 years.

The Hill reports that an unnamed top agency official said Melville's resignation was indicative of the diplomatic community's resistance to Trump's policies.

"It means a lot when someone whose had it all in their career just says, 'I can't do this any longer,'" the unnamed official told Foreign Policy. "I just wonder who's next."

The Trump administration has angered other world nations, including some allies, by implementing tariffs on steel and aluminum imported into the U.S. And, on Thursday, it was reported Trump had urged French President Emmanuel Macron to withdraw his country from the European Union, suggesting the U.S. and France could then possibly negotiate a better bilateral trade deal.
