A former high-ranking Israeli official said his nation should take advantage of Donald Trump’s election and expand construction in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Gideon Sa'ar, once the No. 2 man in the Likud party and a former interior and education minister, said Israel should now develop a construction plan he called, "Jerusalem Now," according to the Times of Israel.

He said the plan would include wide-scale building in neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, and in the controversial E1 corridor which connects Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Ma'ale Adumim, the newspaper reports.

Similar calls for construction in those areas have been met with bitter international opposition in the past. And Palestinians argue it would cut off East Jerusalem, which they view as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Sa'ar also urged Israel to ask the U.S. to move its embassy to Jerusalem as promised by Trump during the campaign.

Israeli politicians have expressed hope that the Trump election signals that American policies to that nation will change dramatically, the Jerusalem Post reports.

"It is time to rethink our diplomatic flexibility," the newspaper quoted Sa'ar.

"In past years, diplomatic pressure led to a lack of building in Jerusalem. There will be less pressure from Trump, so we should be building much more in our capital."
