Israeli Ministers Demand End to US Spying

Sunday, 22 December 2013 06:33 AM EST

JERUSALEM — Israeli ministers are demanding an end to U.S. spying on Israel following revelations that the National Security Agency intercepted emails from the offices of former top Israeli officials.

Transportation Minister Israel Katz said Sunday he would press Israel's Cabinet to demand that the U.S. cease spying on Israel. Housing Minister Uri Ariel said on Israel Radio he expected the U.S. to admit wrongdoing.

They also called on the U.S. to release a convicted spy jailed for passing classified material to Israel.

Documents leaked to newspapers last week by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed that British intelligence agency GCHQ worked with the NSA to target email addresses belonging to the offices of a then-serving Israeli prime minister and defense minister.

The Israeli prime minister's office declined comment.

The Guardian newspaper reported Friday that one 2009 document showed that Britain's eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, worked with the NSA to target an email address belonging to Israel's Ehud Olmert.

Other prominent targets included a top European Commission official responsible for competition policy, German government buildings and the Thales group, a defense company partly owned by the French government.

The report said the UN development program and the children's charity UNICEF, as well as several unnamed African heads of state, were among the spy agencies' targets.
