Israel is pressuring Hungary to take down campaign posters with anti-Semitic overtones and "reconsider the consequences," Haaretz reports.

"No gain can come from such a campaign recalling the historic lesson," Israel’s ambassador to Hungary, Yossi Amrani said in a statement. "At the moment beyond political criticism of a certain person, the campaign not only evokes sad memories but also sow hatred and fear.

"It's our moral responsibility to raise a voice and call on the relevant authorities to exert their power and put an end to this cycle."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is behind the billboard campaigns attacking Hungarian-born and Jewish-American billionaire George Soros with ads that feature an enormous black and white picture of the 86-year-old Holocaust survivor smiling and urges Hungarians not to let him "have the last laugh."

In small print, the ad reads: "99% Reject Illegal Immigration."

The head of Hungary's Jewish federation called on Orban to remove the billboards, and Human Rights Watch campaigner Lyia Gall told Reuters the campaign uses "imagery that evokes memories of the Nazi posters during the Second World War showing 'the laughing Jew.'"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest on July 18, which will be the first time an Israeli prime minister has visited Hungary in 30 years.
