Ireland has agreed to participate in this year's traditional "shamrock ceremony" hosted by the White House in honor of St. Patrick's Day, following controversy sparked by Donald Trump's presidential victory.

Enda Kenny, Ireland's minister of defense, confirmed on Thursday that he will fly to Washington for the March 17 gala and use it as an "opportunity" to discuss the Emerald Isle's "priorities and concerns" with Trump, Irish Central reports.

The ceremony became an annual event under the Clinton administration to signal the close ties between the U.S. and Ireland.

But Kenny had been under heavy criticism back home for sending his congratulations to Trump after his Nov. 8 election win and was being urged not to attend.

Irish Central said that during the presidential race, Kenny criticized Trump for using language he considered "racist and dangerous." But he later his words came in the "heat of battle" and that Ireland would be happy to work with the billionaire businessman-turned-commander-in-chief.

A spokesman for Kenny told The Irish Examiner that the relationship between Ireland and the U.S. "is complex and multi-layered."

"The government's priority is to ensure that the long-standing relationship between Ireland and the US is protected in the interests of Irish citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. The taoiseach looks forward to visiting the White House on St. Patrick's Day," the spokesman said.
