An agreement will likely involve a timetable for inspection of Iranian atomic sites and Tehran’s agreement to decrease its uranium enrichment activities.
“Some of the sites will be open for inspection. Everything will be partial, Rabi said. “This is convenient for the Iranian and the American presidents.”
While visiting Saudi Arabia on Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated President Barack Obama’s position that “the United States will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
But in his interview with the Post, Rabi indicated that Washington’s stance has little relationship to the evolving political and military realities of the situation.
The partial nuclear deal being negotiated now is a “certified recipe for creating a nuclear Iran in the intermediate future,” Rabi warned.
Washington, he said, will seek to allay the concerns of allies — including Israel, Egypt, and the Gulf States — and try to convince them that they have not been abandoned by the United States.
Rabi said that Tehran has successfully used diplomatic forums to isolate Israel, and that Jerusalem needs to come up with a new diplomatic approach to fight back.
Despite Israel’s “war of attrition” against Tehran’s plans, “the world is allowing Iran to go nuclear,” he stated.
