Hamas has developed a new high-powered rocket that can carry a much heavier explosive load than what has previously been in its arsenal, The Jerusalem Post reported on Tuesday.

Dozens of these rockets have already been produced and are similar to missiles possessed by Hezbollah, which threatens Israel from the north.

The Times of Israel reports that Hamas has been working to refill the thousands of rockets and mortar shells it launched at Israel during the 2014 Gaza war and rebuild destroyed attack tunnels, a goal that Israel says it achieved earlier this year.

The new Hamas missiles are short range and thus the Israeli communities in the South close to the Gaza Strip would bear the brunt of any attack.

Due to that possibility, the Israeli army's Home Front Command has drawn up a contingency plan to evacuate residents who live near the border.

While Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system has been very successful in shooting down incoming rockets, it is more difficult for it to intercept the shortest range missiles that do not stay in the air long enough to be targeted.

The new Hamas rockets are apparently part of a strategy to strike Israel in the most effective way, Hamodia reported.

In addition to the goal of clearing out Israeli border towns with the more explosive rockets, Hamas also seeks to prevent IDF ground troops from entering Gaza through a massive use of these weapons.

The reports of the new Hamas missiles comes as tensions have increased on the Gaza border after the terrorist organization accused Israel of assassinating one of its senior operatives, Mazen Fuqaha in Gaza last week.
