Turkey's Political Leaders Discuss Coalition, No Agreement

Monday, 10 August 2015 05:20 PM

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday met with the leader of the country's pro-secular party to gauge whether they have enough common ground to press ahead with efforts to form a coalition government, but they reached no agreement.

Party officials told reporters after the more than four hour-long meeting that the leaders would hold further talks later in the week.

Davutoglu's Islamic-rooted ruling party lost its parliamentary majority in elections in June, forcing it to seek a coalition partner.

Delegations from Davutoglu's Justice and Development Party and Kemal Kilicdaroglu's Republican People's Party have held a series of meetings in search of a partnership, but had left more difficult issues to their parties' leaders.

"No final decision was reached," said Omer Celik, the culture minister and member of the ruling party, adding that the two leaders would meet again either on Thursday or on Friday to make a "final assessment" on a possible coalition.

"For two parties who are politically opposed to reach a consensus requires great effort," Celik said.

New elections are called if no government is formed by Aug. 23.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reported to favor new elections that could return the ruling party, which he founded, to power without the need for a coalition partner.
